Last year I decided to rebuild my OEM Yamaha super jet. I won the Monster Energy Mid-west water cross tour amateur Championship in 2004 on this boat. I haven’t been riding OEM jet skis for a few years now. Mostly XFT or Wamiltons carbon fiber. I hate to see a good watercraft go to waist. I started throwing some parts in a pile and when I have collected enough I get to wrenching. Nice Riva modified 760 ported cylinder, Coffman semi dry pipe from my old Yamaha FX1 and a RAD light weight flywheel. We all know the drill MSD enhancer UMI steering system UMI trigger, a cable from this a coupler from that, some tie down straps from my old flat nose. I was ready. All I needed was some spare time to work on it.
Last year I did not have the time. This year was different. I made the time, and it was worth it. About a week ago I completed what was two years of tinkering. As I rolled the jetski out side the shop to fire it up Burtka put on his ear plugs. Last year a bad stator caused one heck of a bang destroying a custom Factory Pipe water box. This was the first attempt since then. I think Gary just wanted to be ready. This time was different. With the RAD flywheel and new stator in place this time for sure. I plugged my ears just to be safe. Anyone whom has ever built or rebuilt a Jet ski Yamaha, Kawasaki Sea Doo it does not matter. The feeling one gets when that motor barks to life is hard to beat. I got out my primer bottle sprayed some pre mix race gas in the carbs held my breath and pulled the trigger. Brbrbrbrbrbrbr, Bring, Bring, Bring. Oh yeah! In the words of Dr Frankenstein it’s alive!!!! What a feeling, My weekend was made My beast lives. Next, the water test. We will have to wait until the ice melts for that. I will keep you posted.
